Italy: Activists Demand Liberation in Protest Against Gender Violence
Italy - November 25, 2024 In a dramatic act of civil resistance on the International Day Against Gender-Based Violence, the activist group BRUCIAMO TUTTO disrupted Rome’s streets with a powerful combination of protest, performance, and passive resistance. Beginning at 9:24 a.m. in the San Lorenzo district, 11 protesters initiated their demonstration at Piazzale Tiburtino. They carried out a “swarming” action, crossing streets in synchronized motions and pausing on crosswalks to block traffic. The brief yet symbolic disruption escalated with stops growing in duration and ended in song. The group then transitioned into a slow march along Via Tiburtina, using live music to accompany their procession toward Villa Mercede. There, a black-stained red bench served as a stage for poetry, dance, and speeches. The activists left behind handprints and banners to mark their message. Tensions peaked at 9:47 a.m. when police arrived, urging the demonstrators to disperse. Nine activists continued their march in passive resistance, ultimately being detained at 10:58 a.m. Speaking during the protest, activist Alessandra declared: "Today is the day against gender violence, and yet we do not feel free. We demand a Liberation Income to help survivors escape their abusers and regain autonomy." Giuseppe added: "This fight isn’t just for women but for everyone. Men must confront their complicity and stand in solidarity." The protest highlighted anger, resilience, and hope, blending noise and artistry to amplify a demand for systemic change. BRUCIAMO TUTTO’s message was clear: recognition, action, and justice cannot be postponed.
