The recently concluded World Maritime Merchants Forum (WMMF) 2024 in Hong Kong, China focused on topics such as the role of ship finance in industrial transformation, the implications of new carbon-tax regulations and the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in driving digital change in shipping.

Themed "Navigating the Cycles," this fourth edition of the forum has sent a clear and compelling statement of humanity's commitment to sustainability.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LOTHAIR LAM, WMMF chairman and general manager
"Why do we call it 'maritime merchants' (forum) and not just 'maritime' forum? Because we also invited professionals from the whole industrial chain of the shipping industry to discuss important issues of the shipping sector. "

As the platform broadens, it is also expected to engage more businesses, boost cooperation and innovation across the industry and beyond, and jointly build a prosperous Hong Kong, Lam said.

As a gateway to Asia and one of the world's busiest and most efficient ports, Hong Kong has been adjusting itself to a plethora of new requirements in the maritime industry, and has been actively engaging regional and global partners in fueling a green shift.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): WANG YONGXIN, President of China Merchants Energy Shipping Company Limited
"In the future, with the rise of green and digital transformations, these developments will inject new vitality into Hong Kong. At this juncture, Hong Kong should seize this trend decisively, boldly shift lanes and overtake, and strive to achieve a more prominent and leading role in the new wave of competition."

The first edition of the forum was held both online and offline in 2021.

Starting from the third edition, the WMMF was incorporated into the Hong Kong Maritime Week as a flagship event, sharing the opening ceremony with the maritime week.
