This is the heartwarming moment volunteers rescued a stray dog with a wooden skewer piercing its mouth.

The injured brown dog approached Donrit Praserttham, 52, and nuzzled his leg before opening its mouth to reveal the skewer lodged between its fangs at the Wat Pho Thong Phuttharam School in Rayong, Thailand, on November 7.

Donrit said he was moved by the canine's desperation to have the sharp object removed.

Footage shows the Good Samaritan carefully removing the skewer with a pair of pliers while another volunteer soothed the dog. The mutt ran off but soon returned seemingly to thank its rescuer.

He said: 'Judging from the appearance, the skewer was probably from a street food vendor. The dog must have bitten into it, but it snapped and pierced its mouth.

'I think it came to me to ask for help. I don't know if it has an owner, but it seemed to be living near the school and was accustomed to humans.'

The volunteer urged residents to properly dispose waste to prevent stray dogs from biting or swallowing harmful items.
