United Kingdom - November 24, 2024 Storm Bert unleashed widespread chaos across Wales on Sunday, November 24, with floodwaters inundating homes, businesses, and public spaces. While severe "danger to life" flood warnings were lifted by Monday, the storm's aftermath continues to disrupt daily life. Areas including Pontypridd, the Rhondda Valleys, Ebbw Vale, and Blackwood were hardest hit as rivers swelled and burst their banks following relentless rainfall. In Rhondda Cynon Taf, over 100 properties were flooded, roads were closed, and residents were advised to boil their water. In Ebbw Vale, a landslide from an old coal tip left streets buried in mud and sludge, with residents left to clean up the mess. In Pontypridd, homes on Egypt Street saw floodwaters ruin furniture and belongings, leaving residents feeling abandoned. Local businesses, including a car garage, were devastated by the deluge. Transport services were severely impacted, with railway lines in the Cynon Valley submerged, including Cwmbach station. Rail services were cancelled, and delays persisted throughout Monday. Flooding also forced the closure of Cardiff’s Bute Park, halting the city's major Christmas attraction, "Christmas at Bute Park." Further west, a house partially collapsed, and a pub saw water rising halfway up its bar windows, highlighting the widespread destruction caused by the storm.
