Indonesia landslide rescue teams search for seven missing
Indonesia landslide rescue teams are searching for seven missing people after torrential rain battered the region.
Authorities operated excavators to search for victims after heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and rockslides in the North Sumatra province.
Disaster agency spokesman Abdul Muhari confirmed that 11 people were killed in landslides in the Karo, Padang Lawas, and Tapanuli Selatan districts, while four others died in flash floods in Deli Serdang on November 23.
The search operation, which includes hundreds of rescuers, police, and military personnel, has been hampered by ongoing rainfall.
Muhari added: 'It's still raining from the afternoon until the evening. This is the main obstacle while we try to locate the missing people.'
The severe weather has caused significant damage to homes, mosques, and rice fields, with several villages also cut off due to road blockages.
He also warned residents in North Sumatra of possible flooding in the coming weeks, with more heavy rainfall forecast.
On November 16, a cliff landslide buried a main road in Tadokalua Village, Tabang District, Mamasa Regency, West Sulawesi. The incident has cut off access for thousands of residents.
Landslides are common in Indonesia, particularly during the rainy season. The risk is further exacerbated by deforestation and illegal mining activities in remote areas.
