This is the heroic moment two raccoons were rescued from flooded drains in Rhode Island.

Department of Transportation workers discovered the fluffy-furred mammals struggling to stay afloat in a rapidly filling drain during a routine catch basin cleaning on November 21.

Personnel from the Westerly Animal Shelter responded and successfully pulled the raccoons to safety.

The animals were safely returned to their natural habitat.

Authorities said: 'We're happy to help these critters go back home.'
