Heavy rain fell in Salvador, Brazil, with more than 219 millimetres of rainfall recorded in 72 hours.

Authorities said the rainfall already exceeds double the typical monthly average for November, which is 108.2 mm.

Footage from resident Gerson Rosario shows the heavy downpour on November 27, with water accumulating on roads.

Data from the Salvador Civil Defense Alert and Alarm Monitoring Center (Cemadec) shows that the rain has far exceeded expectations, with some areas receiving more than three times the usual for this time of year.

General Director of Civil Defense (Codesal), Sosthenes Macedo, said: 'The ground is extremely waterlogged, and we have already recorded landslides. Sirens have been activated, shelters have been opened, and we ask that the population remain alert.

'Any sign of risk, such as cracks or pops, should be reported by calling 199. Our teams, including engineers, architects and geologists, are ready to respond.'
