Clinical scientist quit to become influencer - and now earns £12k a month on TikTok
A clinical scientist quit to pursue a career as a full-time influencer - and now earns £12k a MONTH working just six hours per week.
Josiah Young, 22, studied neuroscience and psychology after finishing school - in a biomedical science degree majoring in human physiology spanning nearly five years.
He started posting light-hearted comedy skits filmed with friends on TikTok around the same time he started his first job - as a clinical scientist specialising in sleep - in January 2024.
But just nine months on, Josiah handed in his notice - because he had amassed 200,000 followers and wanted to be a full-time influencer.
As he created more content his opportunities expanded further - and he now works with major brands including Dell, Cornetto, Microsoft and Lipton's.
Incredibly, since going full-time Josiah earns around £12,700 per month - £10,000 more than his £2,700 pay check from his clinical work.
He only works around SIX hours a week - and gets invited to premieres, award ceremonies and gets gifted free items.
Josiah says he'll "keep riding the wave" and earn as much as possible in social media - but plans to return to clinical work eventually."
Josiah, from Brisbane, Australia, said: "I started posing videos of 'a day in my life' and little comedy skits and started to gain followers."
"I realised if I mentioned certain things, it worked well with TikTok's algorithm - so I did and then gained more and more."
"I resigned from my clinical job two months ago because I had to keep turning down influencer opportunities because of work."
"In August I got my first five-figure brand deal - and it went from there. "
"Now I work under six hours a week - sometimes I can be paid more than my old monthly salary for one video."
"I wasn't unhappy in my old job but I did often stress about my finances"
- I can't express the awe I have for people who work in healthcare.
"I didn't grow up with much money so I am so grateful for every opportunity I have."
"Eight months ago if you'd told me, a random sleep scientist, he would be a TikTok influencer, I would never have believed you."
Josiah loved his clinical role but made some videos on the side for fun.
But as his following grew, he found himself inundated with advertising opportunities and collaborations which brought in more than his monthly wage at the clinic.
Two months ago he took the plunge and left his clinical role and hired a social media manager to help him establish paid work.
After his first major campaign advertising Dell XPS, he was contacted by others too.
He said: "I'm at a point now where I have triple the amount of followers than the entire population of my hometown."
"I get invited to awards and sent freebies."
He says the money is great - bringing in almost £13k a month - with the potential for that to grow as he takes on larger projects.
Josiah's dream brands to collaborate with would be Nintendo and Disney.
He would also love to take on opportunities in the acting, music and modelling worlds.
He said: "The first time I did a five-figure brand deal, I remember thinking 'that's too much money to be giving one person, right?'."
But he hasn't lost sight of his roots - and said he sends money back to his family to support them.
He also takes his former colleagues at the clinic out for a slap-up dinner on him once a fortnight to show his support for them.
Josiah said: "I'm just riding the wave at this point. I think I'm happy just to live in disbelief a bit longer."
"Almost three million people a week sit and watch this random bioscience dude from Brisbane."
"I can't even fathom it - I get imposter syndrome. Is it even real?"
"One day I will turn back to clinical work, but I'm doing this first to secure myself."
"Maybe I'll do a PhD one day - but I have no plans to stop for now."
