A huge wild elephant was caught on CCTV strolling through a store and searching for food.

Footage shows the jumbo's massive body occupying almost an entire aisle as it ambled through the farm equipment shop in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on November 25.

It walked slowly, sniffing around, hoping to find something to eat, but it only found an ornamental shrub that was edible.

The hungry beast plucked the plant to eat while it browsed around more, leaving giant footprints made by its muddy feet.

Shopkeeper Nutthakul said: 'The elephant came from Khao Yai National Park. We only found out about it when we heard the noises coming from the shelves even after we were closed for the day.'

The elephant eventually exited through the gate while a store worker followed from a safe distance behind to lock it.

Park rangers were waiting for it outside by the car park, shining a flashlight on it.

No damage was done inside the store.

Elephants are known for their voracious appetite. The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) found need to eat up to 150kg of food per day - the equivalent of 375 tins of baked beans.

Conservationists in Thailand say that wild elephants - up to 3,500 of them - have even developed a taste for human food and prefer to rummage through homes and vehicles for snacks, instead of the bland leaves they find in the forest.
