STORYLINE:
Artificial intelligence and Earth observation will be the core focus of Phi-Lab Spain, the European Space Agency's (ESA) first research center in Spain, according to a professor at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).
The center aims to drive space innovation through collaboration between academia, industry, and investors, said Pro. Carlos Lopez.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Catalan): CARLOS LOPEZ, Professor, Polytechnic University of Catalonia
"Spain has recently made a strong commitment to advancing technologies related to artificial intelligence and has long been involved in Earth observation missions. With this in mind, we aim to combine these strengths in our proposal."
Located in the UPC building in Castelldefels, near Barcelona, Phi-Lab Spain will support cutting-edge projects in space technologies, particularly those promoting climate resilience.
The center will allocate 1.1 million euros annually to projects under Europe's ScaleUp programme, which focuses on accelerating the commercialization of space technologies.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Catalan): CARLOS LOPEZ, Professor, Polytechnic University of Catalonia
"Each year, a new call for projects will be made, with selected projects receiving funding from Phi-Lab. These projects will be developed over two years, within the initial four-year term of the Phi-Lab initiative."
Phi-Lab Spain will also join Phi-LabNET, a network of European centers working to boost private investment and foster innovation in the space sector.
SOUNDBITE 3 (Catalan): CARLOS LOPEZ, Professor, Polytechnic University of Catalonia
"The projects supported by Phi-Lab will focus on using artificial intelligence to measure and mitigate climate change. In Spain, particular attention will be given to addressing challenges such as droughts and optimizing water use."
The center's total budget of 13.2 million euros will be funded by the regional government of Catalonia and the ESA, ensuring strong local and international backing for this groundbreaking initiative.
