Mexico - November 29, 2024 Popocatépetl, one of Mexico’s most active and high-risk volcanoes, has experienced a significant surge in activity, with 16 exhalations and nearly nine hours of tremor in the past 24 hours, according to the National Disaster Prevention Center (CENAPRED). The volcano released steam, volcanic gases, and small amounts of ash, while tremor activity was recorded for 535 minutes with high frequency and low amplitude. Local authorities reported light ashfall in several municipalities in the state of Morelos, including Hueyapan, Xochitlán, Tetela del Volcán, and Ayala. Continuous emissions of steam, gases, and ash were observed, drifting southwest. Currently, Popocatépetl remains at Yellow Phase 2 on the Volcanic Alert System, which indicates moderate activity and the potential for small to moderate explosions, ashfall, and the possible occurrence of lahars in the coming weeks due to accumulated ash and expected rainfall. The public is urged to stay clear of the volcano’s crater and the surrounding areas, particularly in case of heavy rain, as mudflows and debris may pose additional risks.
