Experts have spoken about the need to champion open economic and trade cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): DANDY RAFITRANDI, Economy expert with Indonesia's Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)
"APEC is now an open regionalism and also one of the pioneers in terms of trade and investment in the last three decades. I think this is also very important for developing countries, the Global South. I think one of the critical functions of APEC is giving capacity-building to developing countries. APEC can promote even more capacity-building for these small, medium enterprises to benefit in terms of trade, investment, and digitalization, and making them more resilient in terms of facing the next or future crisis."

"China's development is actually a blessing to the region, APEC region. So, the spillover, and also China is expanding its economy, and so the consumer-driven culture that is now growing in China, which is part of the economic strategy."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Spanish): CARLOS AQUINO, Director of the Center for Asian Studies at the National University of San Marcos, Peru
"China has a leading role in the world economy, and particularly in the Asia-Pacific, and it is expected that China will continue with these initiatives: advocating for open multilateral trade, for the resolution of problems in the multilateral organizations, and to continue opening its economy so that the rest of the world also benefits from growth with China."
