Footage shows a plane struggling to land as Cyclone Fengal battered India on Saturday evening.

The Airbus A320 operated by IndiGo was just inches from touching down when the pilot pulled up to perform a go-around at the Chennai International Airport.

Worried passengers clung to their seats as the aircraft wobbled from side to side before circling the airport. It landed on the next attempt.

The low-cost airline said in a statement: 'Due to adverse weather conditions, including rain and strong, gusty winds, which later led to the closure of Chennai airport, the cockpit crew of flight 6E 683, operating between Mumbai and Chennai, executed a go-around on November 30, 2024, in accordance with established safety protocols.

'This is a standard and safe manoeuvre, and our pilots are extensively trained to handle such situations with the utmost professionalism. A go-around is performed when a safe landing cannot be achieved, as was the case with this flight.

'We would like to reaffirm our commitment to the safety of our passengers, aircraft, and crew members.'

Cyclone Fengal caused significant disruption in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. Classified initially as a deep depression, it intensified into a cyclonic storm before crossing the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline near Mahabalipuram with wind speeds of up to 80 km/h.

The cyclone brought heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, causing waterlogging in Chennai and other low-lying areas. Schools and colleges were closed as a precaution, and disruptions included delayed flights, power outages, and challenges for commuters.

Emergency measures, including deployment by the Indian Navy and National Disaster Response Force, were implemented to address the impacts and aid affected residents​

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday that Cyclone Fengal's movement has been extremely slow even, after making landfall, and the storm has remained close to the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast.

They added: 'Cyclone Fengal moved south-westwards during the past 6 hours. It is likely to move westwards slowly and weaken gradually into a deep depression over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next three hours.'
