STORYLINE:
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday incoming U.S. President Donald Trump's threats on tariffs should be taken seriously.
Trump vowed on Monday to impose a 25 percent tariff on all products from Canada and Mexico as soon as he takes office.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): MARY NG, Canadian Trade Minister
"I think that my colleagues and the deputy prime minister and other cabinet colleagues, as well as the prime minister have said to the Canadian public that we take this very seriously and we have been working very hard across the country to be prepared.
Tariffs not only affect Canadian businesses. They actually affect American businesses as well. But this is work that we take seriously and we will work through it on a Team Canada approach."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): DAVID CHOI, Former Chair and Commissioner, Vancouver Economic Development Commission
"In today's globalized world, no country is an isolated island. It's also not possible. The United States, in its development up to now, relies on supply chains from all over the world. Using tariffs to maintain certain advantages would mean American consumers bear the cost. This is a very complex issue."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Vancouver, Canada.
