Landslide destroys car park and building in Thailand as floods kill 22
A landslide destroyed a car park as floods killed at least 22 people in Thailand.
Soil rolled down the mountainside and ruptured the carpark in the Betong district of Yala province close to the Malaysia border on December 1.
The pavement bulged up to 16 feet (five metres) and sent several cars crashing through the windows and walls of the office building.
Authorities said there were no injuries as the landslide happened on a weekend. Officials have relocated important equipment and documents amid more landslide fears.
Betong Mayor Sakul Lenglakkul said he will hold a meeting with relevant agencies to determine the appropriate course of action.
He said: 'As for the office building, I don't think it was too badly affected. But to be on the safe side, the relevant officials, engineers, and departments will inspect the structure's integrity.'
At least 22 people have died and thousand more were evacuated to relief shelters amid the 'worst flooding in decades' to hit southern Thailand.
Heavy rains have been battering the country's southern region since November 22, sparking flash floods and landslides. Though the downpours have eased, the Thai Meteorological Department warned of more rains on December 3 to 5 due to a low pressure area from the South China Sea moving through the Gulf of Thailand.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered officials to speed up relief and rescue efforts.
