Dramatic high speed car chase sees 'drug addict' caught in Thailand
An alleged drug addict stole a car and led police into a dramatic high-speed chase across three provinces in Thailand.
Weeraphon Laphan, 37, was allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine when he hopped into the grey Honda Civic with keys in the driver's seat while being refilled in Saraburi province on November 21.
He was pursued by cops and tried to evade them by exiting to Ang Thong province, where local police were asked for reinforcement.
Teams from two provincial police had been looking for him as he returned to Saraburi, hiding in Lopburi, and moving back to Ang Thong, where he was finally caught on November 23.
Dashcam video of the stolen vehicle shows the car stopping on November 22 to lay low as police patrol were in front of him on a highway. The chase spanned three days.
When the cops closed in on him, he tried to swerve onto the opposite lane and crashed into a police car before being caught.
Mueang Angthong Police StationPolice Captain Prajak Chumyen said: 'Apart from driving across nearby provinces, the suspect also filled up petrol at two stations and left without paying.'
He reportedly stopped to refuel at a petrol station in Lopburi and Ang Thong and left without paying the amounts of 1,000 baht (22 GBP) and 1,400 baht (32.09 GBP).
When Weeraphon was being arrested, he was crying and reportedly told police he was afraid that the cops would shoot him.
The car thief was injured from the crash and was taken to Ang Thong and transferred to Chaiyo Police Station for questioning, and the car was seized by authorities.
The police captain added: 'We found out that he has an arrest warrant for theft issued by Saraburi Provincial Court.'
Weeraphon will be held in custody during the investigation.
