Venezuela: A video recorded inside the Argentine embassy in Caracas reveals the precarious situation of Venezuelan opposition refugees
Caracas, Venezuela - December 02, 2024 Video courtesy of Magalli Meda. A video released by Magallí Meda, a Venezuelan opposition refugee in the residence of the Argentine embassy in Caracas, exposes the precarious conditions in which she and five other anti-Chavez activists have been sheltered since March. The material, recorded during the early morning, shows a dark environment where trees, clouds and some lights in the distance can barely be seen, while Meda narrates the details of the situation. “We fear 10 days like this today. Down there, what you can see, a car passing now and the lights behind that wall and the lights of the DAET (Directorate of Strategic and Tactical Actions of the Bolivarian Police),” Meda describes in the video, pointing out the constant presence of the regime’s forces. According to the leader, a DAET patrol is blocking access to the embassy, which has been without water or electricity for 10 days. The opposition leader also mentions that the diplomatic residence, guarded by Brazil, keeps the Brazilian flag raised as a sign of protection, but denounces that the regime of Nicolás Maduro has intensified the harassment since November 23. The recording comes at a time of growing international pressure. Opposition leader María Corina Machado described the conditions of the asylum seekers as “torture” and called on the international community to intervene immediately. “The democratic world must act now,” she said through social media.
