Pilot drops frozen Thanksgiving turkeys to families in Alaskan wilderness
This is the touching moment a pilot dropped frozen Thanksgiving turkeys to families in the Alaskan wilderness.
Pilot Esther Keim Sanderlin took her generosity to the skies by delivering Thanksgiving turkeys to families living off the grid during the holiday in Skwentna and West Susitna Valley on November 28.
Footage shows the woman air-dropping 'turkey bombs' secured in a black plastic bag with yellow tape around them to remote parts of the region.
The charitable act began three years ago, sharing her blessings with the neighbourhood.
Esther said: 'I grew up in rural Alaska, where there is no road system, so you cannot drive there.
'We had a neighbour who would drop us a turkey for Thanksgiving, and he would do that for all of the different families in the area.
'Twenty years later, we were visiting our closest neighbour. They said that the year before had been a tough winter for them, and they had to split a squirrel between three of them for dinner.
'Since then, I've had a thought that I am going to drop a turkey to all the families I can find that are living out here now.
'I go get the turkeys from Walmart, then I put them in garbage bags and tie surveying tape around them so it's bright.
'I do know a few people out there, so I will reach out to them and say, 'Hey, I'm gearing up for dropping turkeys.'
'I actually have six new families this year that I drop to, and three of which have kids, so I was kind of excited about that, just because I experienced it as a kid.
'I don't know, it just brings me joy to do it, and I'm happy to help where I can. It's pretty fun for me, too,' she added.
This year, she delivered 30 to 40 turkeys and aims to grow her efforts into a nonprofit to reach more families in remote Alaska.
