Lima, Peru - February 01, 2024 The Peruvian government announced that documents supporting the thesis of the Peruvian origin of pisco have been registered with UNESCO. These are manuscripts dated between 1587 and 1613 which, according to Peruvian authorities, were found in the basement of the National General Archives and, after their restoration, establish 1587 as the oldest date of production of pisco and the Peruvian origin of the distilled beverage. These documents mention the production of grape brandy in its territory and the creation of companies dedicated to its shipment from the port of Magdalena de Pisco to other places on the continent, which reinforces the thesis of the designation of origin of this beverage related to the city of Pisco, south of Lima. On December 16, a ceremony will be held to present Peruvian authorities with the certificate of registration with the Regional Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean of the UNESCO Memory of the World programme.
