The 100,000th China-Europe freight train arrived Tuesday morning in Duisburg, Germany, marking a historic milestone for the rail link.
The train X8083 departing from China's Chongqing carried electronics, industrial parts, and household appliances which were quickly unloaded for distribution to various destinations across Europe.
Duisburg, once known for its steel industry, is now a prominent trade gateway between Europe and Asia.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): MARKUS TEUBER, China affairs commissioner of the City of Duisburg
"The train connection between Duisburg and China is very important. It began with one train per week and now 30 to 40 trains per week are running between 15 industrial areas in China and Duisburg.
And it is important for the jobs in Duisburg. Therefore, the city of Duisburg welcomes this connection and supports the connection."
The China-Europe freight train service combines efficiency, stability, and environmentally friendly logistics, making it a critical component of global trade.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MARKUS BANGEN, CEO of Duisburger Hafen AG (Duisport)
"I think that the train connection between China and Europe is a more than valuable part of the international supply chains already. And it addresses an urgent need for a connection between the central parts of China and, especially, Germany. And that will be a huge step in the future as well.
The trains have a huge impact on the development of trade between China and Europe. And for Duisburg and the port of Duisburg, it was a tremendous push for their development and their connections to and with China and our friends there."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): CHANG HAITAO, Acting consul general of China in Dusseldorf
"We are elated to see the China-Europe freight train service has achieved remarkable progress over just 13 years. We hope that it will maintain steadfast development and foster practical exchanges and cooperation between China and Germany, China and Europe."
