STORYLINE:

Chinese modernization and new opportunities for the world are the themes of the 2024 Understanding China conference, which opened Tuesday in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province.

During the conference, many scholars hailed Chinese development in sectors such as electric vehicles, artificial intelligence (AI), and the green economy.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): CARLO DADE, Director of Trade & Investment center, Canadawest Foundation
"Chinese growth is important for pretty much every country on the planet. You're the second largest economy on the planet. So growth in China is good for those of us that export commodities, not just Canada, but also Chile, Peru and other countries in the western hemisphere. So China's growth has had a profound impact on the western hemisphere."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): OSMAN HASSAN, Acting Consul General of Republic of Sudan in Guangzhou
"We can say it is a good standard, great contribution from China to the world. And that's what the world needed, especially Africa and Sudan. Now, there are a lot of agreements between my country and China, and especially in economic (areas). We are gaining from China in many fields, in agriculture, in the field of construction. And this is very important for us to work together."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): JOSEF GREGORY MAHONEY, Professor of politics at East China Normal University
"We talk about China's leading position in green innovation, green development, and how that's now extending to the blue economy. This is what China needs, but it's also what the Global South needs. But it's also what the world needs to survive."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): ELYAS FELFOUL, Director of Partnerships, World Innovation Summit for Education
"I think one of the key results of the economic development of China is the seriousness related to investing in education. So from that perspective, I'm excited to understand a little bit more how now we're gonna implement AI in education in China."
