STORYLINE:
Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib urged on Monday the cessation of Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon.
Speaking at a conference in Egypt on strengthening the humanitarian response to Gaza, Bou Habib said that "the continued Israeli violations of Lebanon's sovereignty and the attacks it has been carrying out since the ceasefire undermine efforts to restore calm and stability on the border, and work must be done to stop these Israeli violations immediately," according to a statement released by the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants on the social media platform X.
Bou Habib said that stability and sustainable peace cannot be achieved without ending Israel's occupation of all Lebanese territories.
The minister emphasized Lebanon's commitment to fulfilling its obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 1701. He highlighted that only through diplomacy and the comprehensive, parallel implementation of the resolution can solutions to the crisis be achieved.
The ceasefire, which took effect on Nov. 27, was intended to halt nearly 14 months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
The Lebanese government has accused Israel of violating the truce. Israel admits to carrying out strikes and attacks in Lebanon in recent days but claims they targeted Hezbollah militants who were violating the agreement.
On Monday, Hezbollah militants fired two mortars at Israeli positions near the Lebanese border, marking the first such attack since the ceasefire agreement was implemented.
The Lebanese armed group justified the strikes as retaliation for "repeated Israeli violations" of the ceasefire agreement.
