This is the terrifying moment a giant python with a bulging stomach floated along a flooded road after heavy rain in Thailand.

Footage shows the 20ft serpent looking weak as it swayed along with the gushing water in Pattani province on December 1.

Its body was bloated in the middle as it was spotted by a local who was walking through the muddy deluge at an intersection.

Resident Mohammad Sobri Abdulrahman said: 'Neighbours told me that the snake had been eating their chickens, so they kept missing.

'When the area was flooded, it had nowhere to go, so it might have been stuck where we first saw it.'

Mohammad said when he returned on December 3, the snake appeared to be already dead laying motionless near the hole of a drain pipe.

The reticulated python is found throughout Southeast Asia, where they live in forests, swamps, canals and even in cities, causing them to conflict with humans. The species is one of the world's largest snakes and can eat humans, cats, dogs, birds, rats and other snakes.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia endure their annual monsoon rainy season from September to November each year. The season sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rainstorms in the afternoon, leading to widespread flash floods.
