Dramatic footage shows a section of the Namachivayar temple's surrounding wall crumpled, with locals standing nearby in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, after heavy rains on December 1.
Part of the wall reportedly fell onto the residences located downhill. Local reports said a massive boulder from the hills also crashed down.
The family of seven was inside their home at the time, and no one survived. The victims were identified as Rajkumar, 32, his wife Meena, 27, their children Gowtham, 8 and Viniya, 5, along with relatives Ramya, 7, Vinodhini, 16, and Maha, 7.
Locals expressed their grief over the fatalities caused by the disaster.
Resident Malti said: 'I was at home, bedridden due to illness, when suddenly muddy water inundated our house, accompanied by a deafening noise.
'The pain of this loss is deeply felt by all who have called this place home for over five decades.'
Fellow villagers rescued Malti during the incident.
Local administrative official, D Baskara Pandian, said: 'Though the rain has subdued, there are possibilities of boulders tumbling down due to rain earlier.
'We have evacuated 50 to 80 people from the locality. Three houses were completely damaged in the landslide, and a few houses were partly damaged.'
