US: Mountain Lion Returns to the Wild After Rescue
Ramona, United States - December 02, 2024 A young female mountain lion has triumphantly returned to the wild after a six-month recovery at San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center. The emaciated and injured cougar, found in Yucca Valley last May, was released on November 20 in San Bernardino County by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The mountain lion arrived at the center with severe wounds, anemia, and extreme weight loss following an apparent animal attack. "We did not know if this mountain lion was going to make it at first because she was so debilitated," said Autumn Nelson, Wildlife Operations Manager at the center. Through intensive care, including antibiotics, pain management, and a naturalistic recovery enclosure, the resilient cat made a remarkable comeback. Outfitted with a satellite GPS collar to monitor her progress, the mountain lion now roams free, marking a successful milestone for San Diego Humane Society’s Project Wildlife program. Specializing in apex predator rehabilitation, the organization helps more than 10,000 wild animals annually, ensuring creatures like this cougar get a second chance at life in their natural habitat.
