Buddhist monks from 37 countries joined a procession in India.

Thousands of worshippers gathered to celebrate the 19th International Tipitaka Sutta Recitation Festival in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, on December 3.

Footage shows devotees parading in the streets from the Royal Thai Monastery to Kalachakra Maidan.

They can be heard chanting the mantra 'Buddha Sharanam Gachchami,' accompanied by traditional musical instruments.

Eric Garcetti, Ambassador of the USA to India, said: 'Tipitaka is not just words but received wisdom and an opportunity to recognise who we truly are.

'Today, we see nations and people divided, but my friendships in India remind me of the power of connections, love, and unity, which is greater than anything else in the world.'

Local media said that the Tripitaka Sutta recitation will run for ten days, during which the teachings of Lord Buddha are recited.

Followers of the Theravada sect of Buddhism consider the recitation a symbol of humanity and world welfare. Wishes for world peace, happiness, and prosperity will be by worshippers during this event.

Diplomatic representatives from Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos were also present at the festival, with 10,000 participants from various parts of the world joining.

The Tripitaka, meaning 'Triple Basket,' is considered a sacred text in Buddhism. It was first compiled in the first century BCE. Its recitation is a source of spiritual energy and peace for Buddhists and has also been used to establish a unique system of scholastic research.
