Tehran, Iran - November 07, 2024 Iran's parliament has enacted a harsh new modesty law, significantly tightening existing dress restrictions that have already sparked nationwide protests and posed a serious challenge to regime stability. Two years after protests against Iran's strict dress codes rocked the nation, the hardline parliament on Sunday passed a new “chastity and hijab” law, backed by the Guardian Council, which vets laws for compliance with the constitution and Islamic law. It must now be signed by the president to come into effect. “I want to be a voice for those who have no voice,” Iran’s president-elect says in victory speech, calling for unity President Masoud Pezeshkian, a critic of the country’s dress code and elected last year on his reformist platform, has come out against the bill, potentially sparking a showdown with powerful conservatives if he tries to block it.
