Two people have died after a horror crash in a grave yard in the early hours of this morning (Thurs).

Emergency services rushed to the grounds of the cemetery in Bradford, West Yorks., just before 5am, where the Volkswagen Polo had crashed into a tree.

Two people were pulled from the wreckage of the silver motor and rushed to hospital, but they were later pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Two occupants of the vehicle sadly died from their injuries."

Photos from the scene showed the badly damaged car on its side on a grass verge in the cemetery.

A Forensic Collision Investigation van was seen at the scene for several hours, with officers using the vehicle to reenact the crash.

Evidence markers were also placed in and around the lane through the cemetery from Birks Fold.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said he heard a fast car at about 1.15am.

He added: "There's so much going on in there at night. It goes in little waves, it might start at 10/10.30pm, I don't always take a lot of notice."

"It was noisy. I couldn't sleep, I'm taking medication and I'm desperate to get to sleep."

"At 3/3.15am there was a sort of 'crump' and I wondered what that was"."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "We were called at 5.06 this morning to reports of an RTC on Birks Fold, Bradford."

"We sent four crews. One car was involved - crews freed one casualty from the vehicle who was passed to the care of ambulance staff."

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said: "Our thoughts are with the families of those involved."

"We will continue to support the police with their ongoing investigations, and we are also working hard to minimise disruption to scheduling at the cemetery where possible."

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to help their investigation.
