A massive brush fire is burning alongside an interstate in Baltimore.

Dramatic footage shows flames and smoke rising into the sky from a wood waste collection yard in the Woodberry neighbourhood near Interstate 83 on December 5.

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace called it the largest fire he has seen in his career, with the flames spreading rapidly due to strong winds.

He said: 'The challenges are that it's a wind-driven fire, it's a very deep-seated fire and we are very limited in access, so our tactics have to somewhat change.

'I have not encountered this type of fire at this size before.'

The blaze reportedly started around 5:15 pm on Thursday in a large storage area with trees and logs stacked about 30ft at Camp Small on W. Cold Spring Lane.

The Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks manages Camp Small as a wood waste collection ground.

Authorities are working to contain the blaze and prevent further damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
