South Korea: Protesters gather outside South Korea's National Assembly calling for Yoon's impeachment
South Korea - December 06, 2024 A large number of people gathered near the South Korean National Assembly on Friday afternoon, holding banners, chanting slogans and calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol. Yoon shocked the nation late Tuesday night when he declared emergency martial law before later lifting the order hours after lawmakers had rushed to the National Assembly building to unanimously vote down the decree. The main opposition, the Democratic Party of Korea, which holds a majority in the 300-seat parliament, has submitted the impeachment motion with the backing of five smaller opposition parties, arguing Yoon's martial law declaration constituted violations of the constitution and other laws. The parliamentary vote on Yoon's impeachment is scheduled on Saturday. On Friday afternoon, many media outlets were on standby at the entrance of the National Assembly. A large number of police forces were also on site to maintain order on the scene, and many police cars were on standby in front of the National Assembly. There was news that Yoon would go to the National Assembly to attend the general meeting of the ruling party members. After the news came out, opposition members gathered at the entrance of the National Assembly to prevent Yoon from entering the building. The National Assembly also immediately took measures to allow only people with access passes to enter and exit. The President's Office then issued a statement saying that the president had no plans to go to the National Assembly. Mass protests and calls for Yoon's resignation are spreading across South Korea, with citizens from diverse sectors including education, religion, NGOs and the arts staging candlelight vigils and rallies denouncing his controversial declaration of martial law, local media reported. Yoon has not made public appearances since he made a televised announcement early Wednesday on lifting the emergency martial law, which was announced only six hours ago aimed at eradicating "anti-state" forces.
