Asteroid streaks across sky in brilliant flash as it falls towards Earth
The astonishing video captures an asteroid streaking across the sky in a brilliant flash before burning up entirely in the Earth's atmosphere.
Footage shows the mesmerizing skyrocket falling through the clouds in Lensk, Sakha Republic, Russia, on Tuesday, December 3.
It flashes brightly before fading away, with scientists suggesting it likely burned up completely upon entering the atmosphere, leaving no visible trace.
Authorities confirmed that the asteroid was around 70 centimetres in diameter.
Local media reported that numerous small space objects, typically up to one metre in size, fall to Earth each year. Scientists are increasingly able to detect these objects at earlier stages.
