Researchers showed how they face deadly sharks while tracking amberjacks in the sea.

Movement Ecology and Reproductive Resilience (MERR) Laboratory scientists said towering seamounts host thriving marine life, including the elusive greater amberjack they have been studying off the Florida Keys.

However, the deep, high-current habitat also poses challenges for them, as they have been in the study since 2015, and it also hosted sharks.

Footage shows a shark turning towards a researcher, revealing its sharp teeth. In the same area, the researcher found an amberjack being lured by a pole.

The researchers said they use underwater cameras on descending devices to monitor conditions and detect nearby sharks to help them.

Extreme depths of these seamounts also lie beyond scuba limits, requiring the deployment of specialised acoustic receivers operated remotely from the surface.

Despite the hurdles, researchers added that the effort has uncovered remarkable habitat use patterns for amberjacks and numerous species tracked through collaborative networks like iTAG and FACT.
