STORYLINE:

Egypt called on Sunday for all Syrian parties to start a comprehensive and inclusive political process that will be the foundation for a new era of consensus and internal peace.

In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry called on all Syrian parties to preserve the country's properties and state institutions, in addition to prioritizing the greater interest through unifying goals and priorities.

Following with great attention the change taking place in Syria, Egypt affirmed its support for the Syrian people and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of their state.

Egypt also stressed its commitment to working with regional and international partners to assist Syria in ending the prolonged suffering of its people, facilitating the return of refugees, initiating reconstruction efforts, and achieving the stability that the Syrian people deserve.

Armed opposition forces seized full control of Damascus on Sunday, ending over five decades of the Assad family rule.

The rapid fall of President Bashar al-Assad's government followed an intense rebel offensive spanning less than two weeks. The campaign culminated in the opposition's announcement that Assad had fled the capital and relinquished power.
