Ghana: Ghana's former president returns to power after historic election win
Accra, Ghana - December 08, 2024 Former President John Dramani Mahama has achieved a historic comeback, emerging victorious in Ghana's recent presidential election. While the official results are yet to be released by the Electoral Commission, Mahama's main rival, current Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat on Sunday. At the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) headquarters, there was an unmistakable sense of quiet following the polls, as Bawumia, who ran as the NPP's presidential candidate, acknowledged that he had not garnered the necessary support from the electorate. Bawumia said he had already called Mahama, who leads the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), to congratulate him. At the NDC headquarters, celebrations erupted as jubilant supporters marked what they believed to be a definitive victory. For many, Mahama's win symbolized a beacon of hope, particularly in addressing Ghana's ongoing economic challenges. Mahama's supporters are optimistic about his ability to lead the country toward economic recovery, and many hope he will deliver on his promises to create jobs and improve livelihoods. Despite the jubilant mood, the NDC leadership has urged supporters to celebrate responsibly, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and unity with the defeated ruling party. With celebrations likely to continue across the streets and homes of Ghana for days, the focus now shifts to the NDC's next steps as they prepare to take the reins of power. The party's promises of job creation and economic reforms will be closely watched by the public as Mahama begins his second term in office. Mahama, born in 1958, took office as president in July 2012, following the death of his predecessor -- John Atta Mills. He contested re-election for a second term in the 2016 election, but lost to the NPP candidate, current President Nana Akufo-Addo. Shotlist: Accra, Ghana - Dec 8, 2024: 1.
