Syria: Gunshots heard in Syrian capital, residents hiding at homes
Damascus, Syria - December 08, 2024 A latest video clip provided by a reporter of the China Media Group on Sunday showed that in the neighborhoods of pro-government figures in the Syrian capital of Damascus, gunshots can be heard from time to time, while most residents are hiding at their homes. Loudspeakers in the city have worked continuously, calling on armed personnel not to shoot. Syrian rebel fighters on Sunday issued a statement on Noor Al-Sham, a state-run television station based in Damascus, saying that they had entered the capital and overthrown the 24-year regime of President Bashar al-Assad. On the same day, the rebel fighters showed themselves on Syrian State Television and claimed that they had taken control of Damascus. Syria's national army was cited as saying that al-Assad's 24-year rule had ended. Citing rebel fighters, multiple media outlets have reported that al-Assad has left Damascus with his whereabouts unknown. One day earlier, the Syrian presidency said that al-Assad was still performing his constitutional duties in the capital. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali said in a speech published on Facebook shortly after the rebels' claim of entering Damascus that he was ready to "cooperate" with any leadership chosen by the people. Jalali said later he had made contact with the rebel fighters. All flights at the Damascus International Airport have been suspended, with staff being evacuated.
