Damascus, Syria - December 08, 2024 Opposition activists said the rebel fighters entered the Syrian capital of Damascus at dawn Sunday, according to media reports. Syria's national army was cited as saying President Bashar al-Assad's 24-year rule has ended. Multiple media outlets have reported that al-Assad has left Damascus with his whereabouts unknown, citing rebel forces. The Syrian government has yet to respond to the reports. One day earlier, the Syrian presidency said that al-Assad was still performing his constitutional duties in the capital. A source who lives in northern Damascus told the China Media Group that intense gunshots of celebration reverberated through the streets. He also heard loudspeakers in the neighborhood, calling for the handover of all weapons and surrender. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali said in a speech published on Facebook shortly after the rebels' claim of entering Damascus that he was ready to "cooperate" with any leadership chosen by the people and urged citizens against vandalizing public facilities. We don't know who gave those orders to the military to withdraw from the city of Homs. Once this city fell, the rebels came to the gates of Damascus. It's like 150 kilometers of just a road between the two cities. So, a few hours ago they started entering Damascus, now the rebels are in Damascus and they are taking over everything."; Homs, Syria - Recent 3.
