South Korea: S Korea's parliament fails to pass impeachment motion against President Yoon
South Korea - December 06, 2024 South Korea's parliament failed to pass the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol on Saturday, as most of the ruling People Power Party lawmakers refused to vote on it, causing a lack of quorum. Only 195 lawmakers participated in the vote, falling short of the two-thirds majority, or 200 votes needed to advance the motion. Opposition parties had vowed beforehand to reinitiate impeachment proceedings if the motion failed. The parliament session in the afternoon also included a vote on a bill to investigate scandals involving Yoon's wife, Kim Keon-hee. The proposed special prosecutor investigation garnered 198 votes in favor and 102 against, but fell short of the two-thirds majority required for approval. Following the vote, most of the 108 PPP lawmakers left the parliamentary hall except three. One ruling party lawmaker remained and two came back after initially leaving. Addressing the National Assembly, Speaker Woo Won-shik urged the PPP lawmakers to return to the chamber and participate in the vote. Lawmakers of the opposition parties, including the main liberal opposition Democratic Party, called out the names of absent ruling party lawmakers in unison, urging them to return and cast their votes. The first lady's alleged involvement in scandals, including stock manipulation at Deutsche Motors and the receipt of luxury bags, has long been a point of contention since before Yoon's presidency. Despite multiple investigations, probes have remained pending, intensifying demands from opposition parties for an independent probe into her actions. Yoon declared an emergency martial law Tuesday night before repealing it early Wednesday as the parliament voted against it. The revocation was approved at a cabinet meeting. The Democratic Party and five other minor parties submitted the impeachment motion over the president's martial law declaration Wednesday. Shotlist: Seoul, South Korea - Dec 6, 2024: 1.
