Syria: No large-scale fighting in Damascus following rebels’ capture
Damascus, Syria - December 08, 2024 Most areas of Damascus saw little to no intense fighting following the Syrian rebels' claim of capturing the capital on Sunday. On the streets, anti-government soldiers and their supporters fired weapons in celebration, toppled statues symbolizing the Syrian government, and set several security checkpoints ablaze. In a stunning turn of events on Sunday, opposition forces in Syria seized state television channels to declare the fall of Damascus and the end of President Bashar al-Assad's government. Rebel forces have been urged to refrain from entering key government buildings, including the Presidential Palace and the Prime Minister’s Office until the transfer of power is finalized. At a hotel in central Damascus, UN personnel lined up vehicles at the entrance to dissuade armed individuals from approaching. Despite this, unidentified armed men entered the hotel lobby. UN personnel, including key officials from various UN agencies in Syria, are now sheltering in their rooms. Some public institutions have been looted and vandalized. It remains unclear whether these acts of theft and destruction were carried out by armed groups or civilians. Shotlist: Damascus, Syria - Dec 8, 2024: 1.
