Chinese police deploy spherical robot equipped with tear gas and smoke grenades
Recently in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, a SWAT team patrolling with a spherical robot has garnered widespread attention.
The robot, developed collaboratively by Lucheng Public Security Bureau and Zhejiang University’s Control Science Academy, is designed to explore the application of unmanned devices in law enforcement.
Equipped with tracking, combat, and apprehension capabilities, the robot can handle close-range danger. It operates on land and water, enabling amphibious patrols and inspections. The multifunctional device integrates surveillance and response, featuring advanced monitoring capabilities to capture comprehensive environmental data. It can process collected information, identify suspicious individuals or behaviours, and alert SWAT officers in real time.
The robot is energy-efficient, consuming less power while rolling than other robot types. It can easily overcome obstacles and adapt to various terrains. Depending on operational needs, it can be equipped with non-lethal police gear, such as net guns, tear gas sprayers, smoke grenades, loudspeakers, and sound wave dispersal devices.
Weighing 125 kilograms and reaching speeds of up to 35 kilometres per hour, the robot showcases impressive mobility and practicality. During patrols, it autonomously follows officers without requiring remote control, staying steadily in step with the team.
Lucheng Public Security stated that the spherical robot is currently undergoing testing. Future updates and improvements will be made based on operational requirements, with the potential to expand the police arsenal with various sizes and functionalities of spherical robots.
