This is the intense moment passengers and crew wrestled a man who allegedly tried to take over a plane mid-air.

The traveller reported attempting to hijack the Volaris Airbus A320-233 aircraft, on flight Y43041, to divert it to the United States on December 8.

The aircraft, flying from Silao Del Bajio International Airport (BJX), was expected to land at Tijuana International Airport (TIJ), Mexico. However, due to the hijacking incident, the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in Guadalajara (GDL).

Footage shows men holding down the suspect while other frantic passengers can be heard crying.

Upon landing in Guadalajara, authorities took the man into custody for investigation.

No injuries were reported from the incident on the plane, with the registration N526VL.

The Volaris management said in a statement: 'The crew acted in accordance with established safety procedures and, in accordance with protocol, the plane was diverted to Guadalajara airport, where the airline placed the passenger at the disposal and custody of the competent authorities.

'Volaris has formed itself as a prosecuting party to ensure that the individual faces the full weight of the law to its ultimate consequences.

'All passengers, crew, and the aircraft are safe. The rest of the passengers were protected to continue their flight to their final destination.

'Volaris regrets the inconvenience this situation caused. For Volaris, the safety of our passengers and crews is the highest priority.'
