Syria: Countries urge calm, peace, security to be restored in Syria
Damascus, Syria - December 08, 2024 Various countries, including Russia, Iran and Türkiye have been reacting to the sudden ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, calling for calm, peace and security to be restored in Syria. The former Syrian president called for a peaceful power transition and arrived in Moscow with his family, Russia's state-run RIA news agency reported Sunday, citing a source from the Kremlin. "After negotiations with some of the participants in the armed conflict within the Arab Syrian Republic, Bashar al-Assad decided to resign as president and leave the country, while instructing for a peaceful transfer of power," said the Russian Foreign Ministry. The ministry added that Russia did not participate in any talks related to a transfer of power. Russia called on all the parties involved to renounce the use of violence and resolve all governance issues through political efforts, and also urged respect for the opinions of all ethnic and religious groups in Syrian society. "We strongly support efforts to establish an inclusive political process based on Resolution 2254, unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council," said the ministry. Additionally, the ministry said that Russia maintains contact with all opposition groups in Syria. Russia has naval and air force bases in Tartus and Latakia, Syria respectively. According to reports from Russian media, "anti-government armed groups" entered the city of Tartus on Sunday, with witnesses claiming that these groups have taken control of the town where the Khmeimim Air Base is located. The Russian Foreign Ministry said on the same day that the Russian military base in Syria is on high alert. Iran, a close ally of Assad, said on Sunday that it believes the Syrian people should have the sole right to determine their own future, free from any foreign interference or imposition. The Iranian Foreign Ministry called for national talks involving all segments of Syrian society to form an inclusive government, pledging to support efforts to ensure security and stability in Syria. The ministry added that Iran will spare no effort to help ensure security and stability in Syria, and will continue consultations with all influential parties, especially those in the West Asia region. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stressed in Doha on Sunday the need to prevent terrorist organizations from exploiting the situation in Syria for their own agendas. Speaking at a press conference during the Doha Forum 2024 in Qatar, Fidan expressed Türkiye's commitment to supporting the Syrian people, pledging to help address the challenges ahead. Recent developments in Syria, Fidan noted, have been closely reviewed and monitored in collaboration with key Arab nations, including Qatar, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, as well as the United States, in a concerted effort to promote regional stability. "The new administration must be established in an orderly manner," Fidan stressed, urging international and regional actors to help ensure a smooth transition in Syria. The Lebanese army has increased troop deployments along the Lebanon-Syria border due to the deteriorating security situation in Syria, with additional troops deployed to the northern and eastern border areas in response to the current situation, the army said on Sunday. The Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported on Sunday that Iraq has strengthened its military deployment along the Iraq-Syria border. The Iraqi military has deployed additional security forces, provided thermal imaging and other equipment to border troops. Iraq has completely closed the Qaim border crossing in the western Iraqi province of Anbar on Sunday, while also evacuating Iraqi embassy personnel from Syria, in response to the deteriorating security situation across the border, according to the INA.
