New York, United States - December 09, 2024 United Nations officials on Monday have called on all parties in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to earnestly implement the active ceasefire agreement as the country struggles to alleviate its serious humanitarian situation. The UN Security Council on Monday held a meeting to review the DRC situation at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Bintou Keita, Head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC and Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the DRC said at the meeting that the current security environment, worsening climate change and multiple epidemics have exacerbated the humanitarian situation in the DRC, with nearly 6.4 million people currently displaced. However, funding for the humanitarian response plan has improved significantly compared to last year, said Keita. China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong said that the ceasefire agreement signed between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda is an important step to ease the situation in eastern Congo amid the humanitarian crisis. Fu said China urges all armed groups to immediately cease fire and disarm, and calls on the international community to actively respond to security and humanitarian challenges.
