United States - December 02, 2024 Police released bodycam footage showing the moments before an officer shot and killed a family dog, sparking questions about police response procedures. The incident began with a 911 call reporting a woman screaming for help before the line disconnected. Two officers responded to the scene near Macland Road and Corner Road in Powder Springs. In the footage, officers approach a home as a man opens the door. One dog runs outside while a woman struggles to hold back another, named Zeta. Zeta breaks free, barking and running toward the officers. Moments later, shots are fired, killing the dog. Cobb County Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer announced an active investigation, stating the department seeks answers on whether proper procedures were followed. “Are we doing what we should as a profession? Are we doing what we should as an agency?” VanHoozer questioned. The footage leaves unclear whether physical contact occurred between the officer and Zeta, adding further scrutiny to the case.
