Qatar: Middle East countries condemn Israel's advance into Syrian territory
Doha, Qatar - December 09, 2024 Doha, Qatar - Recent Countries in the Middle East have condemned Israel's advance into Syrian territory, reiterating their support for Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity. On Tuesday, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Israel for exploiting the current chaotic situation in Syria and violating its sovereignty. At a press conference, Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, a spokesman for the country's Foreign Ministry, reiterated Qatar's support for Syria's national unity and called for dialog among all political factions in Syria. He also urged the implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions to safeguard Syria's sovereignty and independence, and prevent the country from falling into prolonged chaos. "The main priority right now is to maintain the integrity of Syria, the sovereignty of Syria, the rights of all Syrians, and the inclusivity of Syria to be a home for all Syrians," he said. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned Israel's seizure of the demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan Heights on Tuesday, reaffirming its commitment to Syria's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Lebanon's Hezbollah also issued a statement on Tuesday condemning Israel's actions in Syria, calling the destruction of military capabilities of Syria as a dangerous act of aggression. On Tuesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati held a phone call with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, to discuss the situation in Syria. Both sides emphasized the importance of supporting Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. Syrian militant groups, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), waged a major offensive from northern Syria in late November and have since swept southwards through government-held areas, capturing the capital, Damascus, within less than two weeks. Following the offensive, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government collapsed. Al-Assad has resigned and arrived in Russia for asylum. On Sunday and Monday, Israeli warplanes hit military and security sites in and around Damascus, the southwestern province of Quneitra, Syrian navy vessels at Latakia Port, and military depots in coastal areas. The Israeli military also crossed into the demilitarized buffer zone established under the 1974 ceasefire agreement, taking control of border areas as of Monday, according to Syrian and Israeli sources.
