Damascus, Syria - December 10, 2024 Israeli missile strikes have inflicted enormous damage to an already heavily bombed research center in Damascus after the area was targeted again on Monday following the ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. At the scene in the Syrian capital, documents lay strewn amid rubble and weapon fragments at the site of the Barzah scientific research center in the north of Damascus. The research center had already been subjected to a U.S.-led missile attack back in 2018 after accusations that chemical weapons developed at the site had been used in an attack on the Syrian city of Idlib. The latest attacks came as part of the Israeli army's efforts to destroy Syrian military stockpiles after Syrian armed opposition forces seized full control of the capital on Sunday, ending over five decades of the Assad family rule. The Israeli strikes also targeted multiple buildings in the area around the research institution. China Global Television Network (CGTN) reporter Hydar Kazwini, who surveyed the area on Tuesday after the bombing incidents the previous day, noted there were signs of "conventional weapons" at the research center site belonging to the Syrian military. On April 7, 2018, the rebels in the Douma district of the Eastern Ghouta countryside of Damascus accused the Syrian government forces of using chlorine gas in an attack in that area, a claim the army and the Syrian government never admitted to. On April 15, 2018, the United States, Britain and France launched a missile strike on Syrian military positions, including the scientific research center in the Barzeh neighborhood northeast of Damascus.
