Vienna, Austria - December 12, 2024 The Vienna Zoo is celebrating a special arrival this December as a two-toed sloth was born on November 18, marking the 14th offspring for the beloved sloth pair residing in the aviary. Zoo director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck expressed his joy, saying, "We are very happy about this offspring. Sloths are among the most fascinating and at the same time most comfortable animals that delight our visitors." The sloth mother is providing loving care to her young, which will be nursed for around six months. Already, the baby sloth has begun nibbling on vegetables like celery and lettuce, though it remains closely attached to its mother. While the young sloth remains well-hidden in its mother's fur, it has grown large enough to be seen by patient visitors. The zoo will confirm whether the offspring is male or female once it separates from its mother. For those looking to unwind during the busy pre-Christmas period, a visit to the sloth family is the perfect escape. Known for their slow movements and restful nature, two-toed sloths can sleep up to 20 hours a day, conserving energy from their plant-based diet.
