A baby sloth was born just in time for Christmas at the Vienna Zoo.

A two-toed furry creature was born on November 18, marking the 14th offspring of the beloved sloth pair in the aviary.

Zoo director Dr Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck said: 'We are very happy about this offspring. Sloths are among the most fascinating and at the same time most comfortable animals that delight our visitors.'

The sloth mother cares for her young, who will be nursed for around six months.

The baby animal has started nibbling on vegetables like celery and lettuce but remains closely attached to its mum.

While still hidden in its mother's fur, the young sloth is large enough to be seen by patient visitors.

The zoo will confirm whether the baby is male or female once it separates from its parent.

Two-toed sloths, known for their slow movements and restful nature, can sleep up to 20 hours a day to conserve energy from their plant-based diet.

For a peaceful escape during the busy pre-Christmas period, zoo officials recommend visiting the sloth family.
