AI camera warns train driver of elephants approaching tracks
An AI camera alerted a train driver about elephants approaching the tracks.
A surveillance camera equipped with an artificial intelligence program saved the lives of two adult elephants and their calf when a locomotive was approaching their path in Odisha, India.
Footage shows the three majestic creatures ambling through lush greenery towards the railway as the train moved closer to them.
Upon detecting the animals, a Forest Department staff member in the control room alerted the train operator, prompting them to halt the oncoming train.
This initiative is part of a trial project involving AI cameras, launched as a site-specific animal conservation plan with support from Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).
Plans are now underway to expand the project's implementation to the Keonjhar and Bonai Forest Divisions, further bolstering wildlife protection efforts in the region.
The local community has expressed admiration for the technology and its potential to save countless lives in the future.
Experts have highlighted the transformative role of artificial intelligence in wildlife conservation, underscoring its significant impact on preserving our natural world.
