Chinese and Korean 'boiler room scammers' arrested living it up at pool villa in Pattaya
Chinese and Korean suspects were arrested at pool villas believed to be call centre scam hubs in Thailand.
Police raided the luxury homes and detained 10 Chinese and three Korean nationals at the upmarket Viewpoint Village in Pattaya on December 12.
The suspects were found with numerous laptops, desktop computers, and cellphones in the makeshift offices. Authorities seized from them 30 computers and 30 mobile phones.
Chonburi Police Commander Police Major General Thawatkiat Jindakornsanong said the operation was launched following a tip-off about Chinese individuals allegedly involved in crime in the area.
The group reportedly duped victims, most of whom were Chinese and Korean, into transferring money into fraudulent accounts.
The police boss said: ‘We are looking into whether there were Thais who were scammed. There were many victims, so we are investigating further to identify relevant individuals, including the owners of the pool villas, to determine if they were involved.'
Thai authorities have been cracking down on call centre scammers in the country.
On December 2, Chinese scam ringleader Demin Wen, 35, was nabbed while fleeing into Cambodia through Sa Kaeo province.
He reportedly ran a network that sold fake social media accounts to criminals using illegally modified devices.
His arrest came as part of an operation dubbed 'Crushing the Grey Dragon', which saw the Crime Suppression Bureau bust numerous call centre scam hubs across nine provinces in May.
