Brazil: Brazilian President Lula recovering after second surgery for brain haemorrhage
São Paulo, Brazil - December 12, 2024 Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is on the road to recovery after undergoing a second surgery for brain haemorrhage on Thursday, to prevent further bleeding in the affected area of his brain, according his doctors. Medical experts at Sao Paulo's Sirio-Libanes Hospital where Lula was being treated delivered a positive update on Lula's condition during a press conference, revealing that he was awake and was able to speak. However, they indicated that he would remain in intensive care for further observation until Friday. Pending the results of ongoing assessments, the medical team anticipates that Lula may be discharged four to five days later. Lula, 79, underwent an emergency surgery early Tuesday morning due to an intracranial hematoma resulting from a blow to the back of his head when he fell at home in late October. The president was transported to the Sirio-Libanes Hospital from the capital Brasilia earlier this week after he experienced headaches that his doctors linked to the recent fall. The presidency's Secretary of Social Communication Paulo Pimenta confirmed on Thursday that Lula will seek reelection in 2026, assuring that the president was in good health following medical interventions, adding he was "the most qualified and prepared person" to continue leading the country.
